Pedestrians crossing the street at Brotherhood Way

In mid-April, we hosted two town halls as part of our third phase of outreach to share the latest findings, present near, mid, and longer-term improvement recommendations, and learn about the neighborhood’s priorities for the Brotherhood Way Safety and Circulation Plan. The in-person event was held on Monday, April 13, and the virtual event took place on Thursday, April 16.

The project team shared findings from the second phase of outreach in a brief presentation, shared draft recommendations, presented questions to attendees, and gathered community feedback to help inform priorities and refinement of concepts.

Findings from the second phase of outreach:

  • Strong interest in safer crossings and traffic calming, especially at key intersections identified by the community
  • Broad support for improvements that are quicker to implement and lower cost
  • Interest in a longer-term vision, especially improved green space and creek daylighting (uncovering and restoring a buried creek) through a relocation of Brotherhood Way, but also some concerns and open questions about that idea

Overall there was strong community support for safety improvements, alongside concern about unmanageable vehicle queues.

Based on these findings, the project team recommended a phased approach to improvements:

  • Phase 0: near term improvements that can be implemented within 18 months of plan adoption; e.g., Quick-Build safety and crossing improvements at the intersection where Alemany, Sagamore, and Orizaba converge.
  • Phase 1: Mid-term improvements that require additional study, coordination, or funding but could be implemented within two to six years of plan adoption, e.g. a raised crosswalk at Sagamore and Alemany
  • Phase 2: Longer term concepts that require additional project development and engagement and would take more than six years to implement, e.g. a bike and pedestrian bridge over Brotherhood Way at St. Charles Avenue or a road diet of Alemany Boulevard between Brotherhood Way and Highway 1.

Town Hall Overview

Over 50 participants attended the Town Halls and provided feedback by identifying the improvements that they prioritized, sharing their comments, and helping identify questions for follow-up, especially regarding any future road relocation or a creek daylighting concept.

Participants expressed broad support for pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, especially at ramps and key crossings, traffic flow, and implementation feasibility, including a variety of opinions about which specific improvements would best benefit the neighborhood.

Next Steps

The public is invited to provide additional comments by May 19 by emailing brotherhood-way@sfcta.org. The Brotherhood Way Safety and Circulation Plan team will identify a final recommendation, and a final report will be presented to the Transportation Authority Board in summer 2026.
