Express lanes are a system of managed lanes used as a pricing tool for managing demand on freeways. Freeway congestion has returned and we are exploring what it takes to build out a regional express lane network that supports equity, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and manages congestion.

Transportation Authority Board Member Aaron Peskin (District 3) joined SFMTA, Downtown SF Partnership, and community leaders to celebrate the completion of the first protected bike lane in the Financial District. The Transportation Authority supported the project with funding from the half-cent sales tax for transportation and the TNC tax.

Our board held a hearing in February for transit agencies to present on the operating “fiscal cliff.” Muni, BART, and Caltrain anticipate significant operating budget deficits starting in the next two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s lasting impacts on transit ridership and revenues.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently announced $800 million for nationwide projects in the Safe Streets for All Program, which includes two grants awarded to San Francisco to help prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.

The Presidio Trust unveiled its first battery-electric bus, which will join the Presidio GO shuttle fleet, offering riders free connections to and from downtown BART, and on the Southern Hills Route around the park. The Transportation Authority helped provide funding for the shuttle through the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Transportation Fund for Clean Air, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration.

The SFMTA completed Vision Zero Quick-Build improvements along Franklin Street, between Broadway and Lombard streets. The project features daylighting, painted safety zones, right turn on red restrictions, and more.

The Transportation Authority Board approved $190,000 in half-cent transportation sales tax funds this month for the design phase of new traffic signals at the Sloat and Skyline Boulevard intersection at 39th Avenue, where Sloat Boulevard becomes State Route 35.

U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Dianne Feinstein and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Bay Area federal delegation members helped secure federal funding for crucial Bay Area infrastructure projects, including the Golden Gate Bridge retrofit, Caltrain Electrification, and Yerba Buena Island West Side Bridges retrofit.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health released an updated 2022 Vision Zero High Injury Network and found that pedestrians are the highest proportion of severe and fatal injuries captured on the network. The SFMTA also presented findings from their Safe Streets Evaluation Program.

Last month, the Mission Geneva Safety Project began construction in the Excelsior. The project is a community-focused effort led by the SFMTA that will bring pedestrian and bicycle safety, transit reliability, and curb management improvements to the Excelsior District.

San Francisco tops the list of 60 major cities worldwide at the forefront of urban mobility trends, according to the 4th Annual Urban Mobility Readiness Index presented by consulting firm Oliver Wyman, citing the city for its innovation, market attractiveness, and rich ecosystem of travel options.

The Conference of Minority Transportation Officials honored the Transportation Authority with the Civic Equity Champion Award at their Northern California Chapter’s 19th Annual Scholarship and Industry Awards Gala in early December. In addition, the American Council of Engineering Companies’ California Bay Bridge Chapter recognized the Transportation Authority as Agency of the Year.
