The Transportation Authority Board elected District 7 Commissioner Myrna Melgar as Chair and District 3 Commissioner Danny Sauter as Vice-Chair for 2025. Our agency also released the 2024 Annual Report that provides highlights of what we planned, funded, and delivered last year.

This month, we joined Bay Area community and transit leaders at the Milpitas BART station to sign the Equity In Infrastructure Project Pledge. The coalition of signers is committed to increasing contracting opportunities for historically underutilized businesses in the infrastructure sector.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced awards for the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program. $25 million was awarded to BART to fund the replacement of train control systems and $10 million was awarded to SFMTA to fund the Presidio Yard Modernization project. 

We celebrated the completion of the Safer Taylor Street project with District 8 Supervisor and former Transportation Authority Chair Rafael Mandelman, former District 5 Supervisor and Transportation Authority Board member Dean Preston, SFMTA, SF Public Works, Caltrans, Tenderloin Taskforce, and community partners.

In December we joined former Transportation Authority Board Member and District 11 Supervisor Ahsha Safai, SFMTA, San Francisco Public Works, San Francisco Police Department, and community members to celebrate the completion of a new signal at Alemany Boulevard and Rousseau Street.

On November 20, we joined District 10 Transportation Authority Board Member Shamann Walton, SFMTA, the California Air Resources Board, the Bayview Community Youth Center, Community Congress for the Bayview Shuttle Program, Caltrain, SamTrans, community leaders, and more to celebrate the launch of the Bayview Shuttle.

San Francisco Public Works is set to improve safety, walkability, and accessibility at the intersection of Clement Street and 6th Avenue in the heart of the Inner Richmond. This high-traffic location connects the community to local businesses, cafes, shops, schools, and community spaces like the Richmond Branch Library, George Peabody Elementary, and Roosevelt Middle School.

The November 2024 election marked the 35th anniversary of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority. In 1989, city voters passed Proposition B, approving the first half-cent transportation sales tax expenditure plan and creating the Transportation Authority, the agency charged with its administration and overseen by the 11 members of the Board of Supervisors sitting in their capacity as the Transportation Authority’s Board of Commissioners.

San Francisco residents share their transit experiences with projects we’ve helped fund through our voter-approved half-cent sales tax for transportation, ranging from neighborhood-scale improvements to capital projects.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission awarded $750,000 to the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to support the Visitacion Avenue Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Improvement Project.

There is a $22 billion funding gap for San Francisco's transportation systems from 2019 – 2045.
