In order to limit the spread of Coronavirus, the Governor’s office and City of San Francisco have directed residents to practice social distancing and stay home as much as possible. For this reason, the Transportation Authority has shifted to a virtual office and will be hosting essential public meetings for the public online.

The Transportation Authority will continue to support the cash needs for a multitude of public works and transit projects across the city. We are also working on keeping capital project delivery moving forward and collaborating with partner agencies to ensure San Francisco’s needs and priorities are included in federal and state responses to the crisis.

The Transportation Authority Board voted to approve SFMTA’s purchase of 219 new Muni light rail train cars to replace its aging fleet. The new vehicles will improve reliability and be easier to maintain.

Street safety improvements and new paving are coming to 19th Avenue, thanks to the Senate Bill 1 Gas Tax and San Francisco's half-cent sales tax for transportation. Caltrans has started repaving lower 19th Avenue from Holloway to John Daly Boulevard, with additional street paving to come after the city implements safety and transit reliability improvements on 19th Avenue.

The Bi-County Transportation Study evaluated potential transportation improvements needed to address significant current and anticipated land use growth on both sides of the San Francisco/San Mateo county line.

The SFMTA’s Sansome and Battery Connections Project will improve walking and bicycling between the Embarcadero and the Financial District by providing an alternative route parallel to the Embarcadero corridor.
