Introduction
The District 1 Multimodal Transportation Study (2024) identified near- to medium-term concepts to improve transit reliability and pedestrian and bicycle safety on Fulton Street. In partnership with Transportation Authority staff and the District 1 Supervisor’s Office, this SFMTA project is advancing the study’s recommendations by designing and implementing safety improvements at three proposed intersections, selected based on crash history and proximity to Muni stops:
- Fulton Street and 40th Avenue
- Fulton Street and 20th Avenue
- Fulton Street and 12th Avenue/Funston Avenue
Following further design evaluations, site feasibility assessments, and public outreach, anticipated improvements include pedestrian "side islands" to improve visibility and reduce crossing distances, crosswalk upgrades, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, lane hardening, and improved signage.
