Pedestrians crossing at the intersection at Columbus, Green, and Stockton

Chinatown’s Columbus/Green/Stockton is a busy intersection, which sits between North Beach and Chinatown. Earlier this year, SFMTA completed a new crosswalk connecting the northeast and southwest corners at Columbus/Green/Stockton. This improvement was studied and implemented through the District 3 Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project.

The Columbus/Green/Stockton intersection is located on San Francisco’s Vision Zero High Injury Network, which comprises 12% of streets where 68% of severe and fatal traffic crashes occur. Before the crosswalk was implemented, the distance to cross between the northeast and southwest corners could take an able-bodied person nearly three minutes to traverse, based on signal timing and walking speeds. Many pedestrians were observed crossing against pedestrian signals or crossing between corners without marked crosswalks, which increased the risk for collisions.

The new crosswalk supports pedestrian safety by shortening the crossing distance and time it takes to travel between the northeast and southwest corners.

In 2022, a new pedestrian scramble at Kearny and Jackson Streets was also completed as part of the District 3 Pedestrian Safety Improvements project. The Transportation Authority provided $819,800 in half-cent sales tax funding, including $750,000 in District 3 Neighborhood Program funds, to SFMTA to support design and construction of the pedestrian scramble at the intersection of Kearny Street and Jackson Street and the new crosswalk at the intersection of Columbus Avenue, Green Street, and Stockton Street.
