At the July 14 Transportation Authority Board meeting, board members approved funding for bike and pedestrian safety improvements along Visitacion Avenue. The Board gave final approval at the July 28 meeting.
The improvements draw on two funding sources approved by the board: $250,000 in Prop L transportation sales tax funds and $341,000 from the Transportation Fund for Clean Air.
This project is a collaboration between the SF Recreation and Parks Department, Mercy Housing, and SF Public Works to calm traffic, improve access to Visitacion Valley Middle School, and better connect the Visitacion Valley and Sunnydale neighborhoods to McLaren Park's program areas and trail network.
The improvements were recommended as part of the Visitacion Valley and Portola Community-Based Transportation Plan, a two-year planning effort led by the SFMTA and funded by the Transportation Authority that engaged more than 2,500 residents. Completed in 2023, the plan identified $25 million in community-requested transportation improvements across multiple neighborhoods.
The project will improve pedestrian safety and multi-modal circulation on Visitacion Avenue by:
- Building new sidewalks and new or upgraded crosswalks
- Adding a two-way protected bike lane that will better connect the Visitacion Valley and Sunnydale neighborhoods to McLaren Park
- Calming traffic and improving access to Visitacion Valley Middle School
- Creating a new off-road path linking Sunnydale to Herz Recreation Center and the park's trail network
The project is expected to be complete by September 2027.
