The Transportation Authority is conducting the District 4 Community Shuttle Study to explore the potential for an on-demand shuttle service that could improve transportation options in the Sunset, Outer Sunset, Parkside, Pine Lake Park, Lakeshore, and Merced Manor neighborhoods.

The Transportation Authority’s prior District 4 Mobility Study recommended studying the feasibility of a community shuttle as a way to boost transit use and provide alternatives to driving. That study found that just 4% of trips within the district used transit, with the majority of trips being taken by private vehicle.

The current District 4 Community Shuttle Study includes a business plan that analyzes an on-demand shuttle service focused on serving residential and commercial areas in the Sunset. Based on community input, the study team has identified potential service models and operating requirements of a successful service. This phase of the project also includes outlining the estimated ridership, cost, and funding strategy for a future service.

A potential next step would be to conduct a pilot implementation of on-demand community shuttle operations, similar to the SFMTA’s Bayview Shuttle that commenced service in late 2024. Following evaluation of the pilot, and identification of dedicated funding for a permanent shuttle program, the service could expand to meet longer-distance travel needs for District 4 residents and visitors with connections to surrounding neighborhoods with high travel demand.
