The Transportation Authority is developing the District 1 Multimodal Transportation Study at the request of District 1 Transportation Authority Board Member Connie Chan to explore ways to improve walking, biking, and transit in the district and to reduce vehicle trips and greenhouse gas emissions in District 1. The study is being coordinated with the SFMTA.

This project is part of the Transportation Authority’s Neighborhood Program which supports neighborhood-scale transportation projects in each supervisorial district and is funded by Prop L Transportation Sales Tax dollars.

During initial public outreach in spring 2023, we heard that the community’s transportation priorities are:

  • Transit reliability
  • Safe routes to schools and transit
  • Street safety
  • Improvements to commercial corridors
  • Congestion management

This initial feedback was used to develop four concepts to improve neighborhood circulation and street safety and three concepts to reduce vehicle trips and greenhouse gas emissions.

The concepts include:

Neighborhood Circulation Concepts

  • Cabrillo between La Playa and Arguello pedestrian and bike improvements
  • Balboa between Park Presidio and Arguello pedestrian and transit improvements
  • Geary corridor transit stop improvements
  • Fulton between La Playa and 22nd Ave pedestrian, transit, and bike improvements

Districtwide mode shift and greenhouse gas emission reduction concepts

  • Westside north-south express bus service to peninsula cities
  • Curb management on commercial corridors
  • Mobility hubs, where many transportation options and traveler amenities come together to simplify trip making and transfers

We have launched our second round of public outreach and the project team is seeking community feedback on the draft concepts. Please join us at the following events to learn about project updates, ask questions, and share your ideas:
