Introduction

The District 11 Traffic Calming and Sideshow Deterrence project will plan, design, and construct traffic calming and sideshow deterrence measures at various locations across District 11 to enhance safety and deter dangerous driving behaviors. SFMTA will work with the District 11 Supervisor's Office to prioritize locations, and all locations will be reviewed by SFMTA engineers and the San Francisco Fire Department. The project is expected to deliver traffic calming measures at approximately 27 locations and sideshow deterrence improvements at 10 intersections.

The goal of proactive traffic calming and sideshow deterrence is to keep local streets safe for pedestrians and bicyclists by preempting speeding and cut-through traffic on local neighborhood streets and reducing illegal exhibition driving activity. Speed reduction also reduces the severity of injury from a collision. This request will cover the implementation of traffic calming measures, such as speed humps, speed cushions, speed tables, and raised asphalt crosswalks, as well as sideshow deterrence measures, such as centerline and corner hardening with rubber speed humps, delineator posts, and Botts' dots.
