Why is the Alemany deck being replaced?

Caltrans found cracking and corrosion on the freeway bridge above Alemany Circle while conducting inspection reports. The project is to replace the concrete bridge deck in both northbound and southbound directions above Alemany Circle while maintaining both regional and local traffic. The new decks will perform better and provide a higher chance that the freeway is operable during a major earthquake.

Exactly where will this project take place?

In the City and County of San Francisco, near the I-280/U.S. 101 Interchange on U.S. at Alemany Circle

Who will be impacted by the project?

More than 240,00 vehicles travel the Alemany interchange each day. The majority of the cars originate from outside the San Francisco metropolitan area. The U.S. 101 corridor is used to access San Francisco International Airport, Downtown San Francisco, and Silicon Valley. However, those most impacted will be the thousands of people who live and work in close proximity to the project.

Most impacted areas:

  • Bernal Heights Portola and Visitation Valley
  • The Alemany Farmer's Market
  • Bayshore Industrial/Commercial Business District
  • Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, Visitation Valley, Bayview and Hunters Point
