SFMTA has completed two safety projects supported by Transportation Authority funding: the Larkin Street Quick-Build Project and the 20th Avenue Neighborway Project. Together, the projects improve conditions for people walking, biking, and driving along key corridors in the city.

Larkin Street Quick-Build Project complete

The SFMTA completed the Larkin Street Quick-Build Project in early May. The project improved Larkin Street between Market Street and Geary Boulevard, a corridor located on the High Injury Network, the 13% of San Francisco streets where the majority of severe and fatal traffic crashes occur.

The Transportation Authority contributed $4.5 million in Prop D TNC Tax funds and $345,000 in Prop K sales tax funds to support the work. The project was delivered as part of the SFMTA's Vision Zero Quick-Build Program.

Improvements along the corridor include:

  • Painted safety zones and signal timing changes to encourage safer driving speeds and improve pedestrian safety
  • Updated parking and curbside loading configurations

These changes are designed to reduce conflicts at intersections and improve safety for people walking along Larkin Street.

20th Avenue Neighborway Project complete

The SFMTA has also completed the 20th Avenue Neighborway Project, a 1.9-mile segment of 20th Avenue connecting Golden Gate Park to Stern Grove. The Transportation Authority funded the project with $560,000 in Prop K sales tax funds.

The project upgraded existing sharrows to designated bike lanes and added a new bike signal at Lincoln Way and 20th Avenue. The SFMTA also installed traffic calming features, including speed humps and daylighting at intersections to improve visibility. Throughout the corridor, angled parking was converted to parallel parking. This work was critical in improving bicycle and pedestrian safety for the street's most vulnerable users.
