A new Muni hybrid bus

This month, Muni riders will see the first buses from the SFMTA’s latest bus purchase enter service, with new features that improve safety and the passenger experience while reducing emissions.

The SFMTA has purchased 112 new buses, including 94 40-foot hybrid buses and 18 40- and 60-foot battery-electric buses. The Transportation Authority provided $42.3 million in Prop L transportation sales tax to support the purchase of these new buses.

The new hybrid buses have USB charging ports for passengers, more space for strollers, and plug-style exit doors that open outward and slide along the outside of the bus instead of opening inward.

For operators, the buses have a fully enclosed operator barrier. In addition, ten of the buses will pilot digital video side mirrors, which work alongside standard mirrors to help operators see around the bus. The SFMTA expects all of the new buses to be in service by early 2028.
