Curbside electric vehicle charging is moving from pilot to permanent program
The Transportation Authority Board approved $150,000 in Prop L sales tax funds to support the next phase of the city’s curbside electric vehicle charging work. In 2025, SFMTA and partner agencies completed the Curbside EV Charging Feasibility Study and announced the installation of the first curbside EV charger under the city’s pilot program. These Prop L funds will help transition the pilot program into a permanent program in support of installing 100 curbside EV chargers across the city by 2030.
The funding will support development of policies and associated permitting documents that will allow vendors to apply to install EV chargers within the right-of-way and ensure that chargers are sited in alignment with the city's goals, plans, and legislation, including San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan, EV Roadmap, and curbside EV charging program, passed earlier this month. For more information about the Curbside EV charging program’s permit approach, see this SFMTA staff presentation (PDF) to the Transportation Authority’s Community Advisory Committee.
SFMTA expects to complete the permit program work by fall 2026.
