At the October 28 Transportation Authority Board meeting, the Board approved $5.3 million in half-cent sales tax funds to support the construction phase of traffic signal-related upgrades at 17 locations across San Francisco. This funding will leverage $12.3 million in General Obligation bond funds approved by San Francisco voters in 2024.
The signal upgrades will improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and all road users at these intersections.
The project includes a variety of upgrades, including:
- New pedestrian countdown signals and accessible (audible) pedestrian signals
- New mast arms with higher-visibility signal heads
- Left turn signals
- Upgraded streetlighting
- 97 new or upgraded curb ramps
- Replacement of signal infrastructure
Nine of the intersections are located on the Vision Zero High Injury Network, which includes the pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle high injury corridors and accounts for 75% of severe injuries.
The project is part of the Traffic Signal Upgrade Contract 35, which has a total cost of $20.1 million. All upgrades are expected to be completed by December 2027.
