This past May was National Bike Month, and every year it is celebrated with activities and events throughout San Francisco to help cyclists build community and encourage people to use bikes as a transportation option. The Transportation Authority provides funding for a variety of infrastructure, education, and planning projects in support of bicycle and roadway safety citywide.

Bike and Roll To School Week Rally
In early May, Transportation Authority Executive Director Tilly Chang joined Mayor Daniel Lurie, staff from SFMTA, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, SFUSD, WalkSF, and John Muir Elementary School, as well as community members and students, to celebrate the annual Bike and Roll to School Week. Following the brief speaking program, dozens of students joined a bike train where they rode from the school to Golden Gate Park.

Led by the SFMTA, this is Safe Routes to Schools’ biggest event of the year, fostering safer, more sustainable, and accessible ways for students to get to school. The Safe Routes to School program is included in SFTMA’s broader School Safety Program.

Bike to Wherever Day
In mid-May, bike enthusiasts celebrated Bike to Wherever Day with a variety of activities.  Transportation Authority Chair Myrna Melgar (District 7) and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie participated in the speaking program with San Francisco Bicycle Coalition staff, SFMTA officials, the San Francisco Youth Commission, and the New Wheel electric bike shop at the Bike Away from Work Party in the Mission District at Valencia and 18th streets, hosted by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

The event had a high turnout, including a feature on BART’s Instagram story with our Principal Graphic Designer, Abe Bingham, showing their bike on Market Street.

Since 2019, the Transportation Authority has contributed over $125 million dollars toward a safer, more connected network from a variety of voter-approved and regional funding sources including: the Prop L transportation sales tax, Prop D Traffic Congestion Mitigation Tax, Prop AA Vehicle Registration Fee, Transportation Fund for Clean Air, and One Bay Area Grant Program.
