City officials, transportation officials, and community leaders cutting a red ribbon

In late September, we joined San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, District 6 Transportation Authority Board Member and Supervisor Matt Dorsey, SFMTA, SF Public Works, United Playaz, and community members to celebrate the completion of the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project.

The project improves pedestrian safety and circulation for residents, workers, and visitors to the neighborhood. The project features several improvements, including:

  • Wider sidewalks and bulbouts
  • New traffic signals
  • New roadway striping
  • Streetscape improvements, like decorative crosswalks, pedestrian lighting, and more.

The 6th Street corridor has one of the highest concentrations of pedestrian collisions, injuries, and fatalities in San Francisco and is located on San Francisco’s High Injury Network.

The Transportation Authority contributed $6 million in funding from the Prop K sales tax program to support the planning and construction of the $24.65 million project.
