On October 8, we joined WalkSF, SFMTA, and our partners with Safe Routes to School to celebrate Walk and Roll to School Week at Edward Robeson Taylor School. The annual event celebrated people-powered ways to get to school that are good for our health, climate, and communities. The event featured a walking school bus, activities, and a speaking program with Principal Norris, officials from SFMTA and SFUSD, WalkSF, and community members.
The Transportation Authority provides funding for the Safe Routes to School program from the voter-approved Prop L sales tax and regional One Bay Area Grant funds. The program provides resources, organizational support, skill-building events, and activities that support walking, rolling, carpooling, and taking transit to school. This includes support for Walk and Roll to School Week annually, and coordinating walking and rolling school buses year-round.
In addition, the Transportation Authority funds school daylighting, traffic calming, and engineering programs each year through the voter-approved Prop L sales tax and Prop D TNC Tax programs.
Many of these site-specific improvements are prioritized through the SFMTA’s School Walk Audit Program, which conducts walk audits at up to ten K-12 schools annually to identify opportunities to improve safe walking.
