Earlier this month, we joined Transportation Authority Board member and District 11 Supervisor Chyanne Chen, Mayor Daniel Lurie, SF Public Works, SFMTA, and community members to celebrate the completion of the Mission Street and Geneva Avenue Infrastructure Improvement Project in the Excelsior and Outer Mission neighborhood.
The project was led by SF Public Works and its delivery culminates several years of planning and community input. Mission Street and Geneva Avenue are part of San Francisco’s Vision Zero High Injury Network – the 13% of city streets where 74% of the severe and fatal collisions occur. With improvements covering Geneva Avenue from Prague Street to Mission Street, and Mission Street from Geneva Avenue to Highway 280 Overpass at Trumbull Street, the new infrastructure increases safety for all users—especially people who walk, bike, and take transit. It also improves transit reliability on the neighborhood's most used bus routes and makes loading easier for 300 local businesses through improved curb management along Mission and Geneva streets.
Capital improvements include:
- 34 corner bulb-outs, 17 concrete bus pads, three bus bulbs, and one transit island
- Street resurfacing including 87 curb ramps
- Upgraded traffic signals
- Two raised crosswalks
- Visibility daylighting along the corridor
- Adjusted transit stops
- Curb loading improvements along Mission and Geneva streets
- Bikeway improvements on Geneva Ave
The Transportation Authority contributed over $8.6 million in funding from the Prop K voter-approved transportation sales tax and Prop AA vehicle registration fee for the design and construction phases. These funds accounted for over a quarter of the $31.5 million project, leveraging other local and state funds.
