Transportation officials and leaders cutting a ribbon

In late September, Transportation Authority staff joined BART officials General Manager Bob Powers, Board Vice President Melissa Hernandez, and local officials at the West Dublin / Pleasanton BART Station to celebrate the completion of Next Generation Fare Gates project at all 50 stations systemwide. BART installed the final gates in August, four months ahead of schedule.

General Manager Powers addressed how the new fare gates are transforming the daily BART experience for passengers, including boosting fare compliance and system safety. In addition, BART has reached new ridership highs, increased cleaning, runs all Fleet of Future trains, and was the first transit operator to offer riders Tap and Ride credit and debit card payment options this summer.

Installation of new fare gates was completed at downtown San Francisco stations in February 2025, and the remaining San Francisco station gates were added by August 2025. BART has replaced 715 fare gates across five counties.

The Transportation Authority provided $12.5 million in Prop L half-cent sales tax funding to support this $90 million systemwide project. The BART fare gate project is one of the first projects to be delivered using voter-approved Prop L transportation sales tax funds, benefiting those who live, work, and visit San Francisco and the region.
