The San Francisco County Transportation Authority, in coordination with the SFMTA and the San Francisco Planning Department, is studying a potential new rail subway under Geary Boulevard and 19th Avenue, as part of the Geary/19th Avenue Subway and Regional Connections Study. The study was requested by Transportation Authority Board Vice Chair Myrna Melgar in recognition of the need for better rapid transit options as the city plans for growth.

This subway investment was recommended in the Transportation Authority’s San Francisco Transportation Plan, after being identified in the SFMTA’s Transit Strategy, as part of ConnectSF, San Francisco’s long-range transportation planning process. The purpose of the study is to lay out the strategic choices and planning considerations for this potential major capital investment. The project’s goal is to better connect communities both within San Francisco and to the broader Bay Area while advancing and addressing our city’s long-term transportation, climate, and housing goals and needs.

The subway would serve the city’s most crowded bus corridors, connecting some of our busiest neighborhoods to downtown and regional destinations. Key anticipated benefits of the project include reduced crowding and faster trips for transit riders, improved travel time and reliability for all types of trips, and the potential to reduce vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions. Planning a subway is a multi-phase effort, occurring over many years with gathering the necessary funds and construction at least 15+ years away.
