Rail Program Principal Engineer, Capital Projects Division

Summary

The city of San Francisco is at the center of the evolution of local, regional and global transportation systems, and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority is leading the way in understanding the effects of emerging technologies, crafting policy and investment solutions that address current and future needs, and ensuring that our transportation systems work for all communities. We’re looking for applicants with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in transportation project and program management, with a focus on transit and rail project development and delivery. A State of California professional engineering license is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Reports to: Deputy Director for Capital Projects, or designee

Exemption Status: Full-time Exempt

You'll lead multiple projects and manage technical analysis, with activities ranging from the environmental phase through project design and construction, and interact with a variety of public agency staff, stakeholders, and community members.

Examples of projects you may work on:

  • Pennsylvania Avenue Extension (PAX) Project — We are the lead agency for this approximately $2 – 2.5 billion subway, which will complete the grade separation of the Caltrain corridor in San Francisco. Our next phase of project development will prepare PAX for the future environmental review. You may manage agency relationships, supervise the technical consultant team, and develop project strategy.
  • Geary-19th Avenue Subway — We are leading planning and business casing for this transformative project to connect western San Francisco to the region’s rapid transit network. You may serve as a senior rail advisor, manage technical studies, and engage with community stakeholders.
  • Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) — We are one of multiple agencies partnering to connect Caltrain and future California High-Speed Rail to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco. We are leading or co-leading work to develop the project’s delivery approach, governance strategy, funding plan, and ridership forecasts. We also provide technical support and oversight to design development and other project development activities. You may serve as the Transportation Authority’s technical lead, collaborate with partners, and facilitate agency decision-making.
  • Bayview Caltrain Station — We are leading work to bring a new Caltrain station to San Francisco’s Bayview district. You may serve as project manager for future phases of project development and delivery.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise external consultant teams.

Annual Compensation Range: $141,554 – $195,346

Salary is effectively higher since the Transportation Authority offers an employer contribution to a retirement plan in lieu of Social Security.

In addition, the Transportation Authority offers a generous cafeteria-style benefits package, which includes, but is not limited to:

Retirement: Up to 10.88% employer contribution

Insurance: Health, dental, life, short- and long-term disability and more. Medical and dependent care pre-tax reimbursement accounts.

Deferred Compensation (Section 457) Up to IRS limit

Vacation: Three (3) weeks of vacation per year during the first 5 years of service.

Holidays: 12 holidays per year, plus 3 personal holidays.   

Commuter Benefits: Up to $160 per month in Commuter Checks or a $20 per month bike benefit.
