With schools back in session for in-person learning, many students and families are commuting again. The Transportation Authority will be developing a School Access Plan for San Francisco to recommend transportation improvement options for K-5 students and their families. The plan was requested by Transportation Authority Board Member Gordon Mar (District 4) and will be coordinated closely with the San Francisco Unified School District and the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families. The School Access Plan is funded by a Caltrans Sustainable Communities Grant with local matching funds contributed by Transportation Authority Board Member Mar.
The School Access Plan will build on the Transportation Authority’s 2016 Child Transportation Study, which found that most parents drive their children to school and afterschool activities and that many families are interested in alternative transportation options. Strategies to address challenges could include adjusted or expanded school transportation services (yellow school bus), carpooling and “walking/biking school bus" programs, or shuttle services to increase access. Strategies will be co-created with parents and stakeholders during upcoming outreach events.
The Transportation Authority is preparing for public outreach which is anticipated to begin between fall 2021 and spring 2022.

Earlier this year, Transportation Authority project staff partnered with DCYF to hear from youth through DCYF’s Child and Youth Friendly Cities Initiative. The initiative is guided by UNICEF USA's groundbreaking national model, and aims to elevate the rights and voices of youth in government decision-making. Facilitated discussions in community hubs offered youth the opportunity to rate and discuss their perceptions of safety when riding transit, walking, and biking. Transportation Authority project staff also developed a coloring sheet activity that was distributed to the youth to share how they travel to key destinations like school, home, and the park.
