This summer, the Transportation Authority Board approved $1 million in half-cent sales tax funds to support the construction of quick-build improvements along the Central Embarcadero from Mission Street to Broadway Street. The Embarcadero serves as a major transit, walking and bicycle corridor, tourist destination, marine-oriented commercial district, and public recreation area. The Embarcadero is also a key traffic route into San Francisco’s major business and cultural areas such as the Financial District, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Chinatown.

Quick-build improvements for this project will include a two-way protected bikeway on the water side of the road, northbound vehicle lane reduction, and expanded curbside loading near the Ferry Building to help improve safety, mobility, connectivity, and accessibility for all users of the Embarcadero. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2021 and complete by March 2022.

This quick-build project is the first phase of the larger Embarcadero Enhancement Project led by the SFMTA, and will be evaluated and monitored to support the follow-up capital phase. The follow-up phase, the Central Embarcadero Safety Project, will focus on expanding the protected bikeway south to Bryant Street, improving and shortening pedestrian crossings, and upgrading traffic signals and wayfinding.

In addition to supporting construction of this quick-build project, the Transportation Authority provided $550,000 in funding from the half-cent sales tax to support the environmental review phase of the Embarcadero Enhancement Project.
