Cars headed toward San Francisco on the freeway

San Francisco’s transportation system faces a critical problem: more people than ever are trying to travel to, from, and through the city. By 2040, there will be more than 100,000 additional daily trips between San Francisco and the South Bay.

The Transportation Authority has released a study on how carpool or express lanes could help address this growing challenge. Our study found that an express lane with a three-person minimum carpool requirement could help move more people along the 101 corridor and improve reliability. Our project team will take this recommendation, as well as other options and an equity analysis, into subsequent study phases in partnership with Caltrans, San Mateo county and other regional partners.
