Here are images from along the Geary corridor showing the current conditions and how it could look with BRT. Please note, these are representative visualizations, and do not represent the final design. Design details will be addressed in the subsequent phase of project development.
Here’s what you would see with the Geary BRT project implemented: dedicated bus lanes extending from the Outer Richmond (to the left) to Downtown (to the right). By keeping buses out of traffic, travelers experience fewer delays. Muni riders’ trips are 10 to 15 minutes faster end-to-end, service is more frequent, and buses arrive on time more often.
In the Richmond District, buses run in new bus-only lanes in the center of the street, physically separated from traffic. This keeps transit flowing without delays from double-parked cars, deliveries, turning vehicles, and other obstructions.
On each side of the bus lanes, new medians provide space for new landscaping and make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street. At bus stops, the medians provide improved waiting areas accessible to all users, including seniors and people with disabilities. Buses no longer weave in and out of traffic at every stop, providing a smoother ride and reducing delays for both transit riders and drivers.
Altogether, the project creates a new and improved Geary Corridor, with more efficient transit service and a safer environment for everyone.
