Background

Octavia Boulevard and the new Central Freeway touchdown ramps at Market Street opened to traffic on September 9, 2005. A number of unresolved issues were identified following the opening of the boulevard in September 2005. They include vehicle queueing on Oak St. in during the morning peak, impacts to Muni bus routes crossing the boulevard in the peak commute periods, and pedestrian and bicycle safety issues at Market and Octavia and at other locations along the boulevard. The Authority coordinated the initial response to these issues, creating a checklist of items for follow up by City departments responsible for project implementation. Two additional steps are planned for 2007 in order to fine-tune the use of the boulevard: an areawide circulation study, and a public information campaign.
