BackgroundProp K contributes nearly $10 million per year to the operating costs of MUNI’s paratransit program. Services are provided to persons with disabilities including frail seniors who cannot use MUNI’s regular buses. Services are also provided for persons with AIDS and for clients of the expanding Adult Day Care system. Muni purchased 20 paratransit vans and provided over 1.2 million trips thorugh its various paratransit services. The Authority Board directed the formation of a Paratransit Working Group (PWG), staffed by the Authority and MUNI, to aide the Select Committee on Paratransit in the development of recommendations for a long-term financial strategy and to identify strategies for optimizing cost effectiveness of the paratransit program. The PWG held its first meeting on September 19, 2005.
