Site of future Mission Bay Elementary School

A new elementary school is being built at 6th Street and Mission Bay Boulevard South in the Mission Bay neighborhood. The Transportation Authority, in collaboration with the SFUSD, is developing the Mission Bay School Access Plan, which will examine ways to improve the school’s connectivity to the city’s transportation network.

The elementary school will be pre-kindergarten to fifth grade and will include a professional development center for high school students, as well as a professional learning center for teachers and staff. The school is scheduled to open in August 2025.

The Mission Bay School Access Plan aims to identify key barriers to active transportation to the Mission Bay School and will propose solutions to address these. The study will prioritize segments of the existing bike network and access routes to the school that should be improved. We will use community feedback alongside other analysis such as collision history and existing conditions in the area to prioritize barriers, then develop alternative design concepts for the most challenging areas.

The project was requested by Transportation Authority Board Member Matt Dorsey (District 6)  and is funded through the Proposition K Neighborhood Program. It was also recommended by the Transportation Authority-led citywide School Access Plan which found that caregivers want investments in infrastructure that support safer school trips.

The project will also advance the goals of San Francisco's Safe Routes to School Program, including reducing the proportion of school trips made in a single-family vehicle to 30% by 2030.

We have launched our first round of public outreach with community engagement events to gather ideas for improving safety and better connecting the Mission Bay School site to the broader citywide active transportation network.

Please join us at an upcoming in-person Mission Bay School Access Plan Community workshop to share your input. Children are welcome to attend. We will have a supervised coloring book activity to engage young children.

We will launch a project survey soon to gather the public’s suggestions and ideas. Please visit our website for updates, join our mailing list and learn more about the study here

A second round of community engagement is expected in the summer of 2024 during which the study team will share potential design concepts and solutions.
