The San Francisco County Transportation Authority Board re-elected District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman as its Chair and District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar as its Vice-Chair for 2024. The Transportation Authority plans, funds, and delivers local and regional projects to improve travel choices for residents, commuters, and visitors throughout San Francisco.

The Transportation Authority Board acting in its capacity as the Treasure Island Mobility Management Agency also re-elected District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey and Supervisor Mandelman as its Chair and Vice-Chair respectively. The TIMMA is charged with implementing the multi-modal transportation program to support ongoing development on Treasure Island.

“I am honored to lead the Transportation Authority where we are actively engaged in delivering our voter-approved Prop L transportation sales tax program and working in conjunction with city, regional, and state leaders to bolster transit at this critical time,” said Chair Mandelman.

Among the Transportation Authority’s major accomplishments in 2023 were the completion of the Yerba Buena/I-80 Southgate Interchange project and groundbreaking for the West Side Bridges project. The West Side Bridges and upcoming Hillcrest Road Improvement project will re-build the bridges and roadways connecting Treasure Island to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and add a regional multi-use pathway as part of the Bay Skyway Phase 1 transbay program that links bicyclists and pedestrians from the east bay to Treasure Island, and to San Francisco’s Ferry terminal via clean electric ferries.

In 2023, TIMMA additionally launched an autonomous vehicle Shuttle Pilot service called The Loop. “With these transformative infrastructure projects, along with the TIMMA’s transit-rich plans, we are enhancing the accessibility and vibrancy of Treasure Island and Yerba Buena, while supporting San Francisco’s recovery and economic development,” said Chair Dorsey.

This year the Transportation Authority will advance citywide studies and neighborhood-based transportation plans, including the Bayview Caltrain Location Study, Geary/19th Avenue Subway and Regional Connections Study, and district-level neighborhood projects in Districts 1 - Richmond District Multimodal Study, 2 - Safety Study, 3 - Walter U Lum Study, 4 - Community Shuttle Study, 6 - Mission Bay School Access Plan, 7 - Inner Sunset Study and Brotherhood Way (jointly with District 11), among other efforts.

Citywide and regional coordination activities in 2024 include working collaboratively on delivery of Caltrain’s Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (expected to be complete in fall 2024), exploring a potential regional transportation funding and transit reform measure for 2026, advancing major capital project funding plans for The Portal (Caltrain/High-Speed Rail Extension to Salesforce Transit Center), Muni and BART capital programs, as well as providing policy support for autonomous vehicle policies and legislation.

The Transportation Authority and TIMMA Boards each consist of the 11 members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, who elect a chair and vice-chair each January and act as agency Board Members.
